Book Review: Bushwalking in the Budawangs (3rd Edition)

Review by Russ Evans

Ron Doughton's original book was published in 1989 and has been very popular as a guide to walking in this great location. The new edition has not only brought the walks up to date but is also improved with interesting photographs and clear maps.

The forty three walks described in the book range well beyond the Budawangs and include Yalwal, Ettrema and the Corn Trail. They are grouped in areas which have directions on how to get to starting points. Each individual walk has a clear summary showing grades, distances, time estimates etc. Points of interest and notable items of flora and fauna are included in the body of the text as well as clear descriptions of the route. Altogether, a much improved version of the original.

The book has given rise to controversy with some arguing that books such this will make the Budawangs even more popular and could lead to the area's overuse. Bushwalkers and others will no doubt argue over this point for many years to come. There is also concern over at least one walk running though the old military training ground. The book has very clear warnings about the possibility of encountering unexploded ordnance in this area.
