A Personal Locator Beacon (PLB) is a small device usually used in medical emergencies when outside help is required i.e. a broken leg, head injuries, snake bite, heart attack, stroke etc.
Most PLBs contain a Global Positioning System (GPS) to report its location. When activated, the PLB transmits a distress signal which is detected world-wide by a global satellite system which is then relayed to the appropriate emergency services. The emergency services then dispatch a rescue team to the coordinates the beacon transmitted. As well as transmitting the PLB’s ID and location via satellite the PLB also transmits a homing signal for the search and rescue team. Response times vary!
Shoalhaven Bushwalkers has 4 PLBs available to walk leaders. Two are kept in the Nowra area, and two in the Bay and Basin area. The contact details for the club members responsible for each PLB are shown in the Members Only area of this website. PLBs must be returned as soon as possible after the completion of the walk.
